Holiday Wrap & Box Recycling
Most boxes (corrugated and chip board single-ply) and gift wrap are accepted for recycling at two Springfield recycling drop-off centers.
Please do NOT put gift wrap or boxes in your blue curbside recycling bin, these will be rejected. Take boxes and any gift wrap that is not
foil or plasticized to: Lake Area Recycling, 2742 S. 6th Street, or F&W Resources, 3327 Terminal Avenue. Both sites are open 24 hours,
7 days a week.
Christmas Tree Collection
Public Works crews will be collecting holiday trees from Springfield city residents during the first two weeks of the New Year, January 1-13.
Simply place your tree (free of tinsel, decorations and lumber base) in the area between the sidewalk and street.
There is no need to call to receive this free service. City residents wishing to take their tree out to the City’s Southwest Facility
may do so at no charge, Monday – Friday, 7:00a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (NOTE: no flocked trees will be accepted at curbside or drop-off).
Phone Book Recycling
Telephone directories from any company may be placed in your blue curbside bin to be recycled. Alternatively, you may drop off
unlimited quantities of phone books to one of two 24 hour drop-off recycling centers in Springfield, located at Lake Area Recycling,
2742 S. 6th Street, or F&W Resources, 3327 Terminal Avenue.
Helpful Information
Free literature is available from the Division of Waste and Recycling on a number of topics. Brochures on trash service, the city’s large
item collection program, curbside and drop-off recycling, and yard waste guidelines are available. The Room to Room Guide to Household Reuse
and Recycling is a comprehensive listing of where to donate nearly 150 diferent items/materials to be reused or recycled in the Springfield area,
usually at no charge. Additionally, the Office of Public Works service divisions directory, Sewer Division services, Snow and Ice Removal
services and Parking Key information are available. Call 789-2255 to receive any or all of these helpful publications.
New Items Added to Curbside Program and Drop-Off Locations
Good News for recyclers! The markets for plastic material have improved, and we can now recycle more types of plastics then ever before.
Springfield residents can now recycle #1 through #7 plastic containers, except for # 6 items made of polystyrofoam (Styrofoam).
This means that all plastic cups, jugs, bowls, bottles and jars with #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #7 on them can be recycled. Now, for you
non-recyclers let me explain about the numbers. You see every plastic container has a number stamped within a recycle logo. That number
describes the type of plastic the container is made of. That is the number we are referring to in this article. Not accepted are any type
of plastic bags, films or #6 plastics, so keep placing those bologna packages, plastic sacks and Styrofoam plates in the trash, please.
Ok, What About Electronics
At this Time of year Springfield residents may find themselves with old electronics to dispose, that have been replaced.
The office of Public Works has made arrangements for virtually ALL electronic items to be recycle at no charge, at BLH Computers,
1832 Stevenson Drive in Springfield. The following items may be dropped off to be recycle, whether working or broken, and
regardless of age.
Computers
Printers
Computer component
VCR’s
Stereos
Video cameras
Calculators
Video games
Small office equipment
Speakers
Laptops
Cell phones/Telephones
There is a small fee to recycle televisions, and console televisions are not accepted. All other electronic items may be dropped
off for free. BLH Computers are open 8:00a.m. - 6:00p.m. M-F, and 10:00a.m. - 2:00p.m. on Sat.
Sidewalk Program for 2007
Well it seems there were a number of people interested in the city sidewalk replacement program last year so watch for the Mayor’s announcement
in the media soon, regarding the 2007 program. Applications are usually accepted from January through March each year for this cost-shared
program to replace damaged sidewalks and also possibly, driveway approaches, curbs and gutters. Callers will need to provide measurements
or the area to be replaced. The service is arranged on a first-come first-served basis, so interested parties are encouraged to call early
after the announcement is made.
Pets Are A Joy But Must Be Managed
There have been recent reports of dogs running loose in the neighborhood and other comments about excessive barking.
Please be mindful of your neighbor's rights to 'Quiet Enjoyment' of their property.
The city animal ordinance requires that all dogs and cats be confined by fence, leash or some type of animal kennel while outside.
There is also a nuisance ordinance that addresses the issue of animal noise such as excessive barking. Generally the ordinance
states that continuous noise for 10 or 15 minutes constitutes a nuisance. The pet owner can be fined and even have their animal
impounded. According to the Sangamon County Animal Control Center, most dogs bark because of the protective nature they feel
for their owners and territory or, because they are confined to the indoors for long periods of time. Frequent walks or
training may be a few options to consider.
Would You Consider Helping Lead Harrison Park in 2007?
The annual meeting is coming in March. Have you considered helping by serving as a block representative, the Secretary or President? You may meet only two to four times a year. Organizing the block party and planning for the annual garage sale are other events that can be as casual or detailed as you want them to be.
If you have questions about a position on the HP board, please don’t hesitate to call me.
