2006 Block Party Oct. 14th

Get ready for a Fall Fling with your neighbors and friends. The cool temperatures and colorful landscape make a great setting for a community gathering. A similar format to last year is planned. So once again we need fire pits to use. Please call Ron Duff 546-1595 if you can lend yours. A slight cover charge will assist with expenses and plan to bring a dish to share. We will provide hotdogs and soda.

This years prize drawings include a landscape bench, deluxe hose real, a fire-pit and an extendable tree timer.

Entry Project Almost Complete

After much discussion and deliberation, new benches have been purchased and installed. They are commercial quality and look great. One final piece has yet to be installed at the entry. A prize bestowed upon Harrison Park Homeowners Association for placing 1st in the city of Springfield’s beautification project. HP received a decorative Sun Dial which we hope to see displayed at the entry, near the benches soon.

Are You A New Neighbor?

If you have recently moved to Harrison Park we welcome you. Perhaps your Block Rep. has had an opportunity to greet you. If not please Call Ron Duff (This years President), at 546-1595. We would like to get some general information about your family and share some tips on HP communication medias and events

Free Yard Waste Bag Collection

Public works provides a month of free yard waste collection during November each year. This year’s collection will run from November 6 through December 1. No stickers are required at this time and there is no need to call to receive service. Place your yard waste bags or containers clearly labeled “Yard Waste” in the area between your sidewalk and street. This collection is intended for leaves, grass clippings and brush/sticks the size of a pencil or smaller. Sweet gum balls may be placed in the trash, or may be placed in yard waste bags.

Free Wood Chips and Mulch

Large quantities of free mulch and wood chips are available year-round from the Public Works Southwest Facility located at 1100 Recreation Drive. Loading assistance may be available for very large loads of mulch; call 789-2325 for details. Hours are M-F 7-3:00 pm and Saturdays (through October) 7-12:00 am.

Branch Pick Up

Free branch collection for fallen branches and brush is provided by Public Works crews from spring through November each year. There is no need to call to receive service – simply place your branches and brush in a pile between the sidewalk and street in front of your house. There is no way to tell exactly when crews will be by your house. If you have a really large branch pile, call to turn this in at the Public Works garage at 789-2246. (Note: “Branches” means any tree limb, stick or brush larger around than a pencil; anything smaller should be placed in yard waste bags for disposal).

Used Tire Collection

The City of Springfield, Sangamon County and IL Environmental Protection Agency will host a used tire collection at the State Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday, October 20 – 21, 2006, from 8 am – 2 pm, enter Gate 11. The general public is welcome to bring in up to 1,000 tires per address (on-rim are acceptable, too) free of charge. NOTE: tires from businesses will NOT be accepted – the collection is for residents, farmers and municipalities. Only tires will be accepted at this collection – for information on disposal/recycling other materials, call 789-2327.
Selling Your Home?

Most lenders and title companies require a letter from the neighborhood association indicating that all assessments and dues have been paid. A letter from the association is easily prepared; however, advance notice is helpful. Often times the homeowner or their REALTOR will call the day of closing or even at the closing with an urgent request. You can contact Karla Duff (Secretary), in advance to avoid problems at your closing. 546-1595.

Harrison Park Website

The HP website is getting a new look. Rick Jackson has assumed the technical management of the HP site and is currently working on a new format. Bill Stokes has hosted and managed the site since its inception and we certainly appreciate his expertise and dedication to the project. www.harrisonpark.net

Large Items

City of Springfield residents that live in a house or duplex, and pay for garbage can service (not dumpster service) may make one call per year to have up to three (3) large items collected from their residence, at no charge. The City has contracted for this service with Allied Waste Services (formerly Capitol Waste). The program is intended for specific, large items such as large furniture, mattresses and appliances. Call 522-7797 and ask to arrange for a large item pick-up. Allied staff will get your name/address, ask what large items you have for pick-up, and will ask you NOT to place these items out at the curb until the night before your scheduled pick-up. Only one of your three items can contain Freon at no extra charge (i.e. refrigerator, air conditioner). If you have more than three items, you may pay the difference in cost and have the additional items collected at the same time – just notify Allied of this when you call for service.

Sidewalk Program

City of Springfield residents that live in a house or duplex, and pay for garbage can service Sidewalk, driveway approaches, and curb and gutter replacements will begin sometime in early August. The program is on a first-come, first-served basis, although your name may be kept on a waiting list for next year’s program if they do not get to your property this year. Costs to property owners are: sidewalks - $2.75 per square foot, or approximately $11.00 per lineal foot for a four (4) foot sidewalk (minimum length to be replaced is 10 lineal feet); driveway approaches - $4.00 per square foot; curb and gutter: $12.00 per lineal foot.
